Leaf Miner Treatment

Leaf Miners are insect larvae that live and feed within the tissue of plant foliage, tunneling as they feed, As they tunnel the tissue in their wake dries out and dies, creating unsightly blisters or serpentine lines that trace their path. Though primarily a cosmetic nuisance, leaf miner infestation will eventually cause partial defoliation and, if left untreated, will seriously compromise the health of the plant they inhabit, particularly if it is evergreen.

In the St. Louis landscape, two genera of plants vulnerable to leaf miner damage are boxwood and holly. Due in large part to the drought of 2012, increased populations of holly and boxwood leaf miners have been reported throughout the St. Louis region. Drought conditions weaken plants and compromise their ability to ward off insect infestation, creating opportunities in normally pest resistant plants.

Since leaf minors live within the leaf, they are protected contact foliar sprays. Leaf miner populations are best controlled through preventive means that target the emerged adults and their egg masses.such as dormant oil. In advanced infestations, systemic herbicides can help control active leaf miner larvae.
